Shabbat Shalom

Why Shabbat?

“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.
And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. (Gen. 2:1& 2 (NIV)

God made the Sabbath so that men would remember him and observe the work of His hand.
To Yahweh this was a very important day. Let’s read what He did say about this day:

For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath and made it Holy. ( Exo. 20: 11 (NIV)

There are three things that stand out in this scripture.

1. God rested
2. He blessed it.
3. He made it Holy

We read that the Sabbath was made for man:

“…”The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. (Mark 2:27 (NIV)

Dit God had a specific instruction for us about the Sabbath?
Let’s read ( Exo. 20: 8 –10. (NIV)

Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it Holy
Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gate.

When the Israelites was in the desert they had to pick up fresh Manna every morning but on the six day they had to pick up a double portion.

The Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.
On the six day, they gathered twice as much – two omers for each person -”Tomorrow is to be a day of rest, a Holy Sabbath to the Lord. So bake what you want to bake and boil what you want to boil
(Exo. 16:4,22,23 (NIV)

What else is there that the Lord wants us to remember on His day?

Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. (Deut. 5:15)

We are also brought out of Egypt. Our sinful life without Jesus was Egypt and God really wants us to dedicate this day to him in al our ways.
He wants us to observe and think of the wonderful privilege to be free and to specifically think about His mercy towards us.

Jesus and the Sabbath

Was Jesus involved in the Sabbath and did He keep it.
Lets look at Matt. 12: 8

For the son of man is Lord of the Sabbath
Also at Luke 4:16. He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went to the synagogue, as was his custom. And He stood up to read.

We see very clearly that God made the Sabbath for us and that we should keep it.
What will be our reward if we keep the Sabbath?Isaiah 58:13,14.

If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the Lord’s holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, then you will find your joy in the Lord, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the Land and to feast on the inheritance of you father Jacob The mouth of the Lord has spoken.
